Sen. Welch: Trump ‘Is in a Box,’ Economic Pressure Is Not Working Because Ayatollahs Don’t Care About People

WELCH: "Well, the reality is, he’s in a box. We’re not going to get the outcome that he thought was going to be easily available to him. So it really does raise questions as to what will happen with the strait, whether there have to be some tolling as an alternative to having it be closed. So I don’t know what the outcome is going to be, but the status quo is really detrimental to the well-being of our country."
QUICK: "Do you think the economic pain and pressure campaign that secretary, the Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, has kind of put on, do you agree with trying to give that time to work? Do you think that could be effective?"
WELCH: "Well, I would — if I thought it would work, I’d give it time to work. But you’ve got an Iranian regime and they really don’t care that much about the suffering of the people that they rule. They’ll let them -- they slaughtered thousands of people when they rose up and had a protest. So the economic pain, the ayatollahs don’t feel it. The citizens do, and they don’t — the ayatollahs don’t care. So I don’t think that’s a tactic that ultimately will work."
