Peter Baker on Iran’s Deal with Oman Over Hormuz; It Would Be Significant, But Not Necessarily the End of the Story

BAKER: "Well, it would be significant, but not necessarily the end of the story by any stretch. Right. Let’s just say they have this deal they’re talking about with oman. Does it, does it? We want to know the details. Does it include some sort of tolls? Obviously there’s been talk about that. That would be a nonstarter from the Trump Administration’s point of view. The Trump Administration has not been directly involved in these talks as far as we understand. But, you know, the president keeps referring to talks as if he is somehow involved. So, you know, clearly, our people are close to people in oman and probably are keeping track through that. But, you know, reopening the Strait of Hormuz only begins to get us anywhere toward a resolution of this war. The war started February 28th and the Strait of Hormuz was open then. So this was, you know, not the goal of the war, the goal of the war, the president has told us now has been narrowed down to reopening the strait, which was opened at the at the beginning and stopping Iran from building a nuclear weapon. Well, this deal wouldn’t do anything about that. Second thing. At best, we might be able to get back to the kind of cease fire that fell apart a few weeks ago, which was only meant to facilitate further talks on the tougher issues like the nuclear program. So we’re still a long way away from an actual resolution, but the more talks go on, the less fighting goes on. Obviously, that’s, you know, that’s what the president would hope for right now."
