HEINRICH: “Just now in the Oval Office, the president explained why he scrapped plans for the U.S. to charge a 20 percent fee to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. He said he doesn't fully agree with the concept of any country charging a fee for freedom of navigation, but he said the U.S. does need to be reimbursed for its efforts that the globe is benefiting from. And he said after speaking with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, they proposed an alternative. He posted, quote, 'Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I've decided to replace the 20 percent United States reimbursement fee with trade and investment deals that the various Gulf states will be making into the United States. Those investments will be massive, but at the same time, extraordinarily good for them and their future.'”
