U.N. Amb. Mike Waltz: Trump Made Clear Taiwan Will Be ‘Status Quo’ Going Forward
EXCERPT:
WALTZ: “Well, I think it stands where it has for quite some time. I mean, the president also said, I heard him. I understand it’s important to them. Took it in, but at the end of the day, made no commitments either way, in line with our long-standing policy of strategic ambiguity. I mean, there is a whole line of thinking that if you basically indicate or tell China we won’t be there, that that could embolden them as well. So it’s about keeping stability and peace in the straits. It is also worth pointing out that Japan is dramatically increasing its defense budget, the Philippines are increasing theirs, Vietnam is increasing theirs, as we’ve seen the South China Sea get militarized. You have 50 percent of global GDP flowing to the Middle East through the South China Sea, Japan, South Korea, huge, huge economies. So, I think the president was quite clear that it is going to be status quo going forward. Every one of these arms sales to Taiwan is always vehemently opposed by the People’s Republic of China.”
