Sen. Eric Schmitt on Peace Talks: The Blockade Is to Squeeze Iran and Get the Best Deal
RUSH EXCERPT:
SCHMITT: "I think that is the next phase of this. Is the president has said, we still have a lot of cards to play and I think the Iranians know that. What you had as a military campaign that is way ahead of schedule, that allowed free ceasefire. And the ceasefire allows for the pressure that you are seeing right now. Whether it is the blockade, the economic pressure to try to squeeze Iran and get the best deal. The president has been very clear about this, it is a limited engagement. They cannot have a nuclear weapon, they have been set back dramatically. And part of the negotiations now will be to ensure they don’t have that. You will not leave that to another president to go do it, accordance the present of United States, President Trump. He holds all the cards, blockade has been effective, the economic sanctions will be effective. I will say though it is disappointing that our NATO allies in particular have really taken a backseat here. Their unwillingness to participate here, I think that shows, whether it is a lack of capability or a lack of desire to engage, I think that has long-term consequences for our allies in Europe. But the president has been clear will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon and he is far along in that process."
