Chicagoans Overwhelmingly Vote in Favor of Restoring Gunshot Detection Technology After Mayor Johnson Ended the Program Two Years Ago
EXCERPT:
JOHNSON: “A separate question about taxing millionaires to fund schools also had about 8 percent support. Now about 72 percent supported restarting gunshot detection technology. The city stopped using shot spotter more than two years ago. That was back in September of 2024. Just last month we heard from the Johnson administration who announced plans for a new gunshot detection pilot program on parts of both the south and west sides of the city. Now nearly 85 percent back having the city seek compensation from the federal government for costs and economic harm related to Operation Midway Blitz, that includes lost tax revenue, public safety response, costs and services for affected families. About 74 percent supported a financial penalty on owners of vacant or undeveloped land to help fund schools, and lastly about 68 percent supported exploring a new permanent outdoor space for festivals and other events. However, no specific location has been proposed at this time.”
