Rep. Don Bacon on the End of MAGA: ‘What I See Right Now Is Populism,’ Under Trump’s First Term, We‘ve Embraced Principles
RUSH EXCERPT:
BACON: "I do think there will be a debate in the party, and I think we need it. And I support the long held Ronald Reagan principles. And by the way, he ran for president in 1976. I was a 13 year old kid at the time, and I was sold, and I was on his campaign team in the working, the working in Illinois for Reagan. And I‘ve been hooked ever since. But his principles of free trade, free markets, economic freedom, standing up to bullies like Russia and China, and being a leader of the free world. Peace through strength, federalism, also with him, there was no hint of corruption or personal gain in the White House. I think the Republican Party, I think America yearns for those principles. And I believe the president and many of these cases or many of the specifics here, has backed away from those principles. And I surely would like to see a debate. And I know I want to be a part of it. I try to bring us back to our roots. And really what I consider the milton friedman part of our party. The Eisenhower, Reagan parts of our party. And I think we would compete very well nationally with more of that. You know, presentation versus what I see right now is more populism and things that really have not been we this past two years. And then before that, under president‘s first term, we‘ve embraced principles that have been contrary to what the Republican Party has stood for, for, for decades. So we need the debate, and I hope we have it."
