John Heilemann on Trump’s Final Campaign Push: ‘He’s Pushing the Limit on How Far He Can Go Into the Realm of Ludicrousness’
EXCERPT:
HEILEMANN: “I don’t know if it’s me and my state of exhaustion at this point in the cycle here, Willie, or if it’s just the reality, but I’m not tracking, like, I’m watching, but I can’t really try to apply any kind of logic to what’s going on with Donald Trump, except to say this, I don’t think he wants to lose. I do think that if you think back to two years ago in the closing days of the presidential campaign, Trump was doing a lot of crazy stuff then too. And we all commented on how, my God, this guy is doing all this crazy stuff. And it looks like he’s — you know, if he couldn’t do better, if he was trying to lose, he couldn’t do better than he’s doing now. And then he won. And I think there’s some part of Trump that he kind of thinks he’s like pushing the limit on how much of — how far he can go into the realm of ludicrousness and kind of doing things that would be considered and are considered to be politically suicidal. And if the Republicans do lose, in his mind, there’ll be a little bit of, well, I could have gotten away with this.”
