Dr. Offit: RFK Jr., CDC Dir. Should Be on TV Every Other Day Talking About How Deadly Measles Can Be
EXCERPT:
OFFIT: “We’ve had eight people die of measles in this country, in a country that eliminated measles by the year 2000. We’re going to be dealing with this every year for years to come until we get on top of this. And right now we have a secretary of Health and Human Services and frankly a director of the CDC are just standing back and watching this happen. They should be on television every other day talking about what we need to do in terms of providing services and — and personnel and — and most importantly letting people know just how serious this disease can be and deadly it can be. I think people think of it as just you know sort of a fever and a rash. It’s not that. Measles is a killer. I think the problem is when we eliminated measles from this country in the year 2000 we also eliminated the memory of measles and I think we’re suffering that.”
