Dan Merica on Midterms: On the Other Side, the Way to Win in November Is to Somewhat Distance Yourself from Trump
RUSH EXCERPT:
MERICA: "I mean, this really gets to the heart of the divide in the Republican Party over what needs to happen over the next month. There’s the more Trump side of it that thinks the way to win in this election is to goose the Trump base, the folks that voted for him in 2024, who were low propensity voters, who maybe voted for the first time ever, that you got to turn those folks out and maybe they would be turned out by a Trump event near them or seen Trump at event, you know, doing the, the normal Trump rally style that he has done and has become so familiar in our American politics. And the other side is that Trump is actually the weight on Republicans right now, and that the way to win in November is to somewhat distance yourself from the president to, to show that you’re willing to break with your party. Obviously, that is difficult to do because for the last 10 years, Republicans have largely tied themselves to Trump. But that is the divide among Republicans right now is, you know, it is they worry that November is going to be tough, that these elections are going to be tough, but they don’t necessarily agree on how they could possibly, you know, dampen the damage that they’re about to take."
