Sen. Warner on AI Regulations: ‘Nobody Would Climb on an Airplane if It Hadn’t Been Tested’

WARNER: “We’re going to ask the Senate to see if they might even pass it unanimously to say, before these models are released, let’s do safety testing. Let’s make sure the sandbox where they test these models has appropriate cyber protections around it. Make sure that there is a safety standard even before testing starts. And we ought to do that in a 45-day period with experts across the board, national security, the frontier models themselves, small tech at the table as well, so we don’t ensconce the incumbency of these models, because, you know, nobody would climb on an airplane if it hadn’t been tested, including some government testing. You know, simply saying, 'Well, the airlines tested this alone so you get on the airplane,' that wouldn’t pass the smell test. But that’s what basically are the rules of the road right now with a technology that I believe — and I was a technology guy before I got into this — that’s going to be bigger than wireless, bigger than the internet, bigger than the cloud. And it’s coming at us at such a rapid rate."
