Jake Sullivan: ‘What They See Is Deference by the American President to the Chinese Leader’ at Xi State Visit
RUSH EXCERPT:
SULLIVAN: "Yeah. I mean, look, if you said to me, Jake, President Trump’s going to go to andrews, it’s going to roll out the red carpet. He’s going to give xi every bell and whistle you could possibly imagine. But you know what he’s going to get. He’s going to get a bunch of concessions from China on things that matter to the American people. I’D say, fine, that’s a good trade. But instead he gives all those things and gets nothing. And so for the rest of the world, basically what they see is deference by the American president to the Chinese leader. And they all see what senator tillis saw, which is that he’s denigrating, alienating, kicking America’s friends and allies and then cozying up to these dictators. And frankly, the last time he stepped on a tarmac to greet a world leader before xi. It was Vladimir Putin. So now you have this back to back image of him standing there, planeside, waiting for dictators to arrive, embracing them.”
