NATO Sec. Gen. Rutte: Trump Was Completely Right to Make the Point About the Importance of the Greenland Deal

RUTTE: “What President Trump has consistently said is that there is this risk, and he is completely right here, that Russia and China might gain more access to the high north, to the Arctic, including Greenland, and also that Greenland is of vital importance for the protection of the United States itself. And what he has been able to achieve together with the prime ministers of Greenland and Denmark is a deal where long-term investments the U.S. is making in Greenland supporting the defense of the United States and NATO territory, are there to stay long-term, but also to prevent the Russians and the Chinese to get access to the Greenland economy. In the meantime, and this is what he and I discussed in Davos, we see NATO countries collectively taking responsibility for the protection of the whole Arctic Circle. This is including the United States and Canada, but also five, the five nations in Europe in NATO bordering on the Arctic. Again, implementing the president’s vision of a secure and safe Arctic. So, I think he was completely right to make that point and I think he was able to get together with prime ministers to bring this to a very successful outcome.”
