Stacey Abrams Announces Creation of ‘Democracy Hedge Fund’ at Clinton Global Initiative

ABRAMS: “But democracy doesn‘t have a money problem. Democracy has a mechanism problem. Abundant resources too rarely reach the people and the places doing the work. But organizers know how to fix a problem like that. You build infrastructure and expand access — addition, not subtraction. So today, Democracy Forward, GovAct Action Fund, Human Rights Funders Network, and the 10 Steps Campaign are announcing the launch of a CGI commitment to action of two new tools in the construction. First, the Democracy Index Fund is a compass designed to pool donor resources and give directly across the democracy field to fights they care most about. Our goal? Direct $1 million over the next 12 months. And second, the Democracy Hedge Fund looks ahead to how we generate capital, constantly working for democracy, an engine creating liquidity to fund the hardest challenges. Our goal there is simple: establish a fund and have assets under management within the next two years. You see, authoritarians have a playbook. They also have a budget. And now, so should we."
