David Sanger: The POTUS ‘Does Not Get to Choose His News Coverage’

SANGER: “The president understands well what the rules are here. The way the Constitution was written. He does not get to choose his news coverage, as you suggested at the beginning. There‘s a reason the First Amendment is first. It‘s first because the Founders understood that one of the greatest checks on power is to make sure that there is a free and unfettered press. Sometimes that leads to extremes. Often it leads to coverage. The president doesn‘t like. Lincoln hated The New York Times‘s coverage of the civil war. Right. So the president has just got to understand that in great democracies, that‘s what you put up with. And that‘s the price we pay for a free press.”
