Dan Henninger on Republicans Making Trump the Focus of Their Campaign: That’s an ‘Open Question’

HENNINGER: "First of all let me try to take issue with the notion Republicans believe this. [Laughter] Where the Republicans believe that or not is an open question. What we know for sure is Donald Trump believes it because he said so. I think there’s a couple of problems with that, Paul. Certainly I watch the speech the other night, all two hours of it. It was vintage Trump. This thing is, Donald Trump is a major political personality. In his speeches, like his rallies are basically performance art pretty talks by just like he is a teleprompter pretty goes off script. And ultimately it’s not exactly clear what message he is delivering. He touches on a lot of points. But if you were a Republican running in a swing district for the house or in a tight race for the Senate like Michael Rogers is in and Michigan, Susan Collins in Maine. You want a precise message the Republicans represent. It is not clear that was coming across in the convention. And secondly those swing districts and Senate races are going to be decided by independent voters. And to some extent traditional conservative Republicans pretty’s got. -based turning out for him. Polling suggests independents in have turned against Trump. So to put him so squarely at the middle of the midterm elections I think raises questions about whether some of these candidates in tight races are going to align themselves that closely with them."
