Jamieson Greer: Inviting Chinese Auto Investments into Canada Is Inconsistent with U.S. Trade Policies, We Can’t Go Along with It

GREER: "Well, remember, the U.S. approach, President Trump’s approach is that we are trying to fix the problems of globalization. We look at our past trade deals and we understand that these opened America's borders to foreign goods, foreign services, they undermine a lot of our workers, and so we are trying to fix that so we can have auto jobs back here, etc.. Canada’s approach is different. Canada is doubling down on globalization. Canada wants to have a bunch of free trade agreements with Europe, with India, with all these other places, and they can do that, right, they are their own country and if that’s what they want to do, that’s fine. But we want to make sure that North America is protected. We want to make sure that if somebody is coming in from Canada and it’s getting a great deal, that it's truly Canadian. So when they go to China and they say, 'Listen, we are going to let in Chinese autos and we're going to invite Chinese auto investment into Canada, that’s inconsistent with U.S. trade policy. And again, if Canada wants to do that, that’s their right, but it doesn’t mean we have to go along with it."
