Hillary Clinton: Gloria Steinem Was ‘Burning Bright to the Very Last Hour of Her Life’

CLINTON: “You know, I was thinking when I heard the news very early this morning, Gayle, that one of the things that I really admired about Gloria was the way she listened. She literally traveled our country, indeed the world, but particularly America, listening to people, listening to their stories, providing, you know, clever, witty responses to people who got discouraged and, you know, telling all of us to keep going. And so, yes, there are very real achievements that she herself had, but that she helped others make. But it was her whole persona, the way that she embodied possibility. And I was thinking, too, one of her great friends became Wilma Mankiller, who became the first woman chief of, you know, the Cherokee Nation. And I got to know Wilma. And Gloria would spend time with her and they would talk about, you know, what women have done for literally millennia to come together, to work together, to help make life better. And she had this concept of signal fires, where, you know, people would signal by setting a fire on one mountain to the other mountain that something was going to happen or we need to get together. I kind of think of Gloria as an eternal signal fire. I really do. Somebody who is out there burning bright for the very last hour of her life.”
