Peter Baker on VP Vance Trolling Critics: It’s Interesting, Even Trump Doesn’t Directly Engage Online

BAKER: "Yeah, it’s really interesting. Even Trump doesn’t directly engage online. He posts a lot of very insulting things, a lot of very, you know, personally denigrating things. But he doesn’t engage in a direct, you know, reposting of other people’s messages and getting into direct arguments with them the way the vice president does. So that’s a little bit different. It’s very different than every other vice president that we’ve seen, at least since spiro agnew, who didn’t have, of course, social media. Even Mike Pence, the President Trump’s first vice president, would not engage in this kind of playground. Insults that that vice president Vance seems to do. There are a couple of things going on here. One, you know, a lot of people would say that in the Trump Administration, this is expected. You’re expected to be, you know, following his lead in the kind of politics of personal denigration and insults, because that’s what he wants to see. And as you say, jd Vance does want to run for president in 2028 once President Trump’s support. The other thing is, and this is what he has said in some interviews, is he is the first millennial vice president. It’s more maybe comfortable, natural for him to engage, I suppose, an older vice president who who believe that their role, you know, requires a certain degree of decorum, a certain degree of restraint, a certain degree of, you know, dignity. They would say that’s not the way Vance sees it. He sees it. You know, the combative nature is what we see in politics today. And what his younger generation seem to think is, is the new norm."
