Rep. Debbie Dingell: ‘I Deeply Believe Israel Has a Right to Exist’

DINGELL: “We have to. I just — you know, I probably am unique in that I’ve lived in the middle of this issue for decades and not the last couple of years. I’ve lived in Dearborn, Michigan. My neighbors were Arab Americans and Muslims, and I’ve known many people of the Jewish faith and, thankfully, was brought up by nuns who taught me to respect and love everybody. And we live in a country where freedom of religion matters. Having said that, I’ve seen hate. I’ve seen too much hate. I’ve seen hate on both sides. I deeply believe Israel has a right to exist. I also do not like what I’ve seen in Gaza, and more recently in southern Lebanon. I know people that have been killed by bombs. If you live in Dearborn, half of people there had family in [inaudible], which has been destroyed. So, I understand that hurt and that pain. We got to come together. We’ve got to figure out a way — they’ve been trying for centuries to find peace in the Mideast. I believe very strongly in a two-state solution. And that’s our job.”
