Eddie Glaude: In Order for Us To Be a More Just Society, You’re Going to Lose Something

GLAUDE: “Those folks who have been committed to slavery, folks committed to exploiting workers, folks committed to women being relegated to the domestic sphere and child — they’ve always been a part of the American story. Then you combine that, Joe, with the zero sum game, right, that if we’re going to be a more just society, you have to give up something in order for us to be a more just society, you’re going to lose something. And so, there’s only so much pie to go around as Elon Musk hogs almost damn near all of it. And so instead of us saying we can bake a bigger damn pie, we start fighting over the crumbs, as it were. And so I think you combine it with the beginnings of the country, that contradiction that we’ve yet to resolve, that some believe that the country belongs to them because of the color of their skin, and those of us who believe that America ought to be a beacon of freedom to the world. And then you combine that with this zero sum game, we find ourselves in this mess, this morass, repeatedly, over and over again, as we try to imagine a better future for our children and our children’s children."
