Fmr. Senator Ben Sasse Shares with CNN the Moment He Told His Wife and Three Kids He Has Only Three to Four Months To Live

‘We went for a walk and he told me’

EXCERPT:

M. SASSE: "He came to get me. We went on a walk, and he told me, we hugged, we cried for maybe 5 to 10 minutes, we prayed, we said, 'Lord, we trust you.' I mean, boom, that's all it was. And then was said, 'Alex is graduating tomorrow. We need to handle this. How are we gonna — we can’t mess up her graduation. Let’s wait till after to tell her.'"
TAPPER: "Breck, obviously, was 14 at the time, now 15. Telling him must have been — I can’t imagine. What was that?"
M. SASSE: "He actually took it pretty hard. I Mean, he -- he cried and he's like, 'I know.'"
B. SASSE: "He — he wanted to ask lots of questions. We didn’t want to tell him the doctor's words that we probably only had three months or so to live. We didn’t want to tell him that right away. And he pushed, he wanted to know those kinds of facts right away. So that was a little harder. After about an hour of talking and crying with Breck, he went and sat at the piano and just pounded for three hours, just playing."
