Wes Moore: ‘Loving Your Country Does Not Mean Lying About Its [Complicated] History’

‘There seems to be a confusion between patriotism and nationalism’

EXCERPT:

MOORE: “The thing that I also know is this, there seems to be a confusion between patriotism and nationalism, where patriotism is a belief in this country's values. It's an understanding that we love this country, but loving your country does not mean lying about its history, that this has been a complicated history in this country. But patriotism means, are you willing to fight for a more perfect union in the future? Nationalism is commitment to a person or commitment to a group. And patriotism is big, but nationalism is small.”
