John Cornyn on Federal Regulation of Elections: ‘I Just Don’t Believe Americans Will Tolerate the Militarization of the Election Process by the Federal Government’
EXCERPT:
CORNYN: “Well, I think the decentralization of the elections is perhaps the single most important protection we have. Now, back when Mitch McConnell was majority leader, he was preaching against the Democrat efforts to try to centralize the election machinery, and we did that, and now sort of we find ourselves on the — sort of on the other end, suggesting that the federal government needs to take a more active role. And that’s one of the reasons we don’t have the votes to pass to SAVE America Act because of people’s concerns about the slippery slope to federal regulation of elections. But I just — I mean, I think this is going to work out, okay, because I just don’t believe Americans will tolerate the militarization of the election process by the federal government. I just can’t bring myself to believe that.”
