Rep. Norma Torres Speaks to Reporters About Her Experience of an ICE Van Trying to Run Her Off the Freeway

TORRES: “What would you do as an American citizen? Would you assume the worst? That somebody’s trying to hijack you? Kill you? Or steal your vehicle? Probably, and I would probably run myself. Because a van looking like an ICE van also tried to run me off the freeway in my district. I know this firsthand. But you see, when you’re brown, when you’re a Latino, you don’t have the choice to run away from a gang, to run away from somebody who’s trying to rob you. Because they could very well be federal agents that will murder you without first identifying themselves and without first telling you what they are chasing you for or what you are wanted for.”
