Molly Murphy: Graham Plattner’s Appeal Was ‘Populism,’ Not Just Ideology

MURPHY: “I think it absolutely can be translated. I think what was appealing to people about Graham plattner and the lessons that people should draw, setting aside the awful personal character and conduct that he embodied, what he brought to people was populism. What he brought was it’s not just one individual, it’s the system that isn’t working. And I recognize the problems in the system. And I’m going to take this as a big versus small fight, big and powerful versus small and overlooked and not about D versus r necessarily. Now it is D versus r, but he was also taking this to represent more than just those politics. And I think that caught on to people. And I think that was really appealing. I don’t think Graham plattner owns that message. You see lots of candidates who are taking on that mantle and doing quite well, and I think you can see that again. I also think that races are most energized when people believe in the candidate and they have a common enemy. And Susan Collins is deeply unpopular.
