Peter Baker on Republicans Passing House Bill Despite Trump’s Refusal to Sign: He’s Sending a Message That He Doesn’t Care Much About Their Reelection

‘It suggests to Republicans on the hill that his priorities are not their priorities’

RUSH EXCERPT:
TRUMP: "I think the message he’s sending to them is he doesn’t really care much about their reelection this fall. That’s certainly the message they’re hearing, whether he intends to send it that way or not, because they did want to run on this, and they’ll try to run on this anyway. But it’s going to be a little harder, obviously, because Democrats are going to point out that their own president refused to sign it. And it suggests to Republicans on the hill that his priorities are not their priorities. Right? That he doesn’t seem to recognize that affordability is a big issue for them. They want him to be able to tell constituents that they are concerned about their struggles to find housing and so forth, and have done something about it. But the president is just absorbed and obsessed by this voting restriction legislation he wants to pass. Even though John Thune, the Senate Republican leader, has told him time and again, there are not the votes there to do it, and there are not the votes there to get rid of the filibuster to do it, which is what the president would like him to do."
