Collin Levy on Brandon Johnson Amid Rent Policies: He’s Pushing New Penalties That Put Cost Burdens on Landlords

‘If the landlord does not want to renew lease after it expired, the landlord then has to pay up to 10 months rent, 10,000 dollars in relocation assistance for the tenant to find the next apartment’

RUSH EXCERPT:
LEVY: "Exactly right. Chicago is an interesting case because Illinois actually has a law that bans rent control. Brandon Johnson is pushing new penalties that put new cost burdens on landlords in other ways. One of the provisions he is suggesting is that is if the landlord does not want to renew attendance least after it expired the landlord then has to pay up to 10 months rent 10,000 dollars in relocation assistance for the tenant to find the next apartment. Even if the landlord is planning to rent the space just like an agent relative or family member they still have to pay $5000 in relocation assistance for the only way a landlord can get out of doing that is if there’s some sort of trust because if there is criminal activity or nonpayment of rent. Otherwise they just have to pay along until the tenant finds a new place."
