Charlie Sykes: Susan Collins Is Much More Vulnerable Today than She Was a Couple of Weeks Ago

‘She is incredibly vulnerable, given Maine’s voting record’

EXCERPT:

SYKES: “The Democrats are focused on Susan Collins because they really have to beat her if they want to win control of the United States Senate, and she is incredibly vulnerable given Maine’s voting record. I don’t think that Maine has voted for a Republican candidate for president in the last several decades. So she has been defying political gravity for a very, very long time. So up until very recently, I think that the Collins folks were thinking that Graham Platner just had so much baggage they could make this about him. They could appeal to centrists who would say, OK, he is a bridge too far. But if the Democrats do not tear themselves apart and they do nominate somebody who does not have that kind of baggage, then Susan Collins faces a lot of headwinds, not merely as a Republican, but as — you know, in a year which I think incumbents, particularly elderly incumbents, are not faring well, she’s much more vulnerable today than I think she was just a couple of weeks ago.”
