Jason Johnson: The Larger Problem within the Democratic Party Is ‘They Haven’t Allowed Their Tea Party Movement to Happen’
EXCERPT:
JOHNSON: “I mean, Donald Trump, Roy Moore, Paxton, who may or may not have a viral video with a mistress. Look, I don't want to hear any Republican talk about the ethics of removing somebody from office because of how they treat people. But I will say this, because the Bernie Sanders of it all, I think, is what's sort of what's encapsulating this situation. For a decade now, you have had many progressive Democrats feeling like the progressive candidate, the grassroots person, ends up getting -- you know, basically screwed over by the establishment. There are people who are still resenting how Bernie Sanders was treated. And I would say, as a political scientist, that the larger problem with the Democratic Party, they haven't allowed their Tea Party movement to happen, right? Republicans, when the Tea Party came up, they're like, all right, fine, you guys are going to take over. John Boehner left. Eric Cantor was kicked out. But when you had The Squad come in in 2018, Nancy Pelosi basically tried to stomp them down. She went after Ilhan Omar. She went after AOC. And now you're having all these DSA candidates pop out eight to 10 years later.”
