Lt. Gen. Mark Herling: ‘You Can’t Kill Your Way Out’ of the Iran War

‘We’re still not looking at the cultural dynamics and what would require the war to end’

EXCERPT:

HERTLING: “It's a huge country, Antonia. I keep bringing this up. Iran is three times the size of Iraq. They have a huge population. They have different territory. Iraq had deserts and some mountains. Iran is all mountains. It has places to hide things and a population that's very diverse. So we're still not looking at the cultural dynamics and what would require the war to end. Iran is wanting their economic systems back. They want to stop the sanctions. They want freedom of navigation and control that freedom of navigation. We want nuclear access. We want to stop their nuclear program. So our diplomacy are miles apart. And I think the president should have learned by now that you just can't affect -- you -- well I'll use a phrase that I was once told by a boss before going into Iraq during the surge -- you can't kill your way out of this.”
