Mamdani: People Live with an Anxiety on the First of the Month Because They Don’t Know if They Could Afford Their Rent
EXCERPT:
MAMDANI: "You know, wherever you live in this country, people live with an anxiety about the first of the month because they don’t know if they’re going to be able to afford their rent. That is not just a New York City-specific problem. It is one that people feel coast to coast and everywhere in-between. And this is a vision for a city where we make it easier for people to actually afford to live here, make it easier for people to afford not only an apartment they may rent, but even to dream of becoming a homeowner. And so much of what you’re speaking about when it comes to federal policy is completely divorced from what any New Yorker is actually worried about. What people are worried about is what we’re actually acting on, which is how to make this city affordable and how to actually ensure that housing isn’t some imaginary dream or fantasy that people have that they can one day afford, but it's a reality. And the way we do that is by putting the full financial muscle of the city behind that kind of a vision. We’re incredibly excited to be doing that today."
