Cate Blanchett Said She’d ‘Love to See a Festival Where 75 Percent of Film Were Women and Film Makers of Color’
EXCERPT:
BLANCHETT: “Yeah. I think it’s a — it’s a sad state of affairs, isn’t it, that film festivals suddenly become the only place where one could talk about wars, conflicts, genocides, as if they’re gonna be solved here. But yes, it’s very important to keep those things on on the — on the public radar. I guess I just wish that the question time and various comments around the world were much more opaque and honest in working towards solutions, because it’s appalling and enraging, what’s going on in the world. But yeah, I think articles like that are really important, I think it’s really important to say, ‘Oh, this year this has happened,’ but I know, from having put programs together, that you don’t want to expose films that aren’t ready and you can’t give opportunities to everyone all the time. And I personally have noticed that there are increasing number of females represented, and there’s many, many different pockets of the festival that one can interface with. I think — I would love to see a festival where 75% of films were women and, you know, filmmakers of color, but, you know, that would probably send people into, ‘What’s going on?!’ You know, like that, but I think that would be — wouldn’t that be extraordinary?”
