Denver Considers Lowering Penalties from up to 300 Days in Prison to 10 Days Shoplifters

‘Things like public urination, shoplifting, trespassing and public camping’

EXCERPT:

KERRIDGE: "Yeah, a little bit complicated here, you guys. But this proposal would actually lower some penalties for crimes of things that would put you in jail for up to 300 days. It would then go down to 10 days and a $300 fine instead. Things like public urination, shoplifting, trespassing and public camping. So, supporters say the city must actually updated its code after the Colorado Supreme Court’s Camp decision which found municipalities cannot punish some offenses more harshly than the state does for similar crimes. But critics warn the changes could send the wrong message at a time when Denver’s already struggling with the perception of public safety concerns.”
