Dem Sen. Blumenthal: ‘I Support Suspending the Gas Tax’ but It Will Make ‘a Very Marginal Difference in What Consumers Pay at the Pump’
EXCERPT:
BLUMENTHAL: “I support suspending the gas tax. There are other sources to fund the Highway Trust Fund. But make no mistake, Joe, the suspension of the gas tax will make, really, a very marginal difference in what consumers pay at the pump. 18.4 cents is not a lot of money when you consider gas prices going to $4.60 a gallon right now and they’re headed higher. In fact, I would predict to you that they may well break $5 a gallon in Connecticut by the end of the week. But it isn’t only gasoline prices. As you pointed out at the very start of the show, the prices of fuel, of oil and gas, are going through the whole economy. All products made with petrochemicals are going to be affected, everything from plastics to medical devices to mattresses to semiconductors. Our whole economy is at stake here, the world’s economy, and we don’t exist in a void or a vacuum.”
