Sen. Jeff Merkley: ‘We’re Bearing the Burden Here at Home’ of the Iran War

‘And people are extraordinarily stressed’

EXCERPT:

MERKLEY: "Well, and in Oregon, it’s over five bucks a gallon, about five and a half, and over six for diesel. And people are extraordinarily stressed. And you have this sense that it’s, 'Wow, the president said he was going to lower prices. And what are we facing? He started a war that not only on its face is damaging our national security and our alliances and a whole host of objectives that president had in the start, and we’re bearing the burden here at home.' And I think the thing that resonated today was that report for April, 3.8%, the highest inflation year-over-year for for three years. And you saw a poll come out that said now he’s in the mid 30s in terms of the cost of living, mid 30s to low 30s on the price of gasoline, in just a plummeting fashion. And now you’ve got, well, you’ve got the Fed saying, 'Well, these shocks are putting us into an uncertain future and they’re reverberating all around the world.' So it’s quite a moment of weakness in which he is going to to China."
