Mara Gay on Redistricting: ‘Black Political Power Is … a Democratizing Force,’ Republicans Want to Eliminate It and ‘Express White Supremacy’
EXCERPT:
GAY: “It's clear just the swiftness with which these Southern legislatures moved, these Republicans moved, to eliminate black political power, it's clear that the Republicans see black political power as a democratizing force, which it is. They understand that, and this is a way to consolidate power, and it's also a way to express white supremacy. So it's both, and I don't think we should miss that. And yes, it's going to animate black people and many other Democrats who are angry about this, but I mean, you know, Joe, because you are from the South, that what the South experiences is not unique. It's just in some ways more American. So I think a lot of Americans who are outside the South should take this as a wake-up call that their own rights are under threat.”
