More Than a Dozen D.C. Police Are Facing Termination Amid Investigation Claims That They Changed ‘Crime Data’ So the Capital Seem Safer

‘D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser is vowing serious consequences’

EXCERPT:

DIL: “This is a blockbuster scandal, first of all. And if it were a different mayor or if the mayor was running for reelection, I think this would be an even bigger political issue. But yes, D.C. had the post-pandemic crime spike. 2023, I believe, was a 26-year high in homicides, and things have improved since then. However, this manipulation scandal, you know, it’s casting doubt on lots of crimes, robberies, violent crimes, where they downplayed the extent to which they were still happening after that crime spike. I think no one is throwing into doubt the drop-off in crime overall, but the specifics -- and for the victims, it matters a lot."
