Aaron David Miller: ‘It Would Take a Miracle’ to Get a Breakthrough in Peace Negotiations with Iran Now

‘The best you can hope for is an extension’

EXCERPT:

MILLER: “We just don’t know. We have a fragmentary understanding of the issues involved. The Iranians want $27 billion of their assets held in commercial banks because of sanctions unfrozen. The Iranians seem to be prepared to dilute the highly enriched uranium they’ve got, what, 900 pounds buried somewhere, and maybe and/or ship it out to the Russians or somewhere else. But I think, again, if the administration’s view of negotiations is I win, you lose, then I think we’re really stuck. And then you run the risk. May 1, Katy, will be 60 days, right? That’s war power. 60 days since the war has lasted. And frankly, right now, the way things are shaping up, the best you can hope for is an extension. It’s hard to imagine a conceptual breakthrough tomorrow or Wednesday.”
