STENGEL: “He. And it’s a negative export. I mean, he has become the incarnation of the ugly American, which is a phrase back from the 1950s, which was about a kind of a bumptious, aggressive America. But even the ugly American of the 1950s talked about the need for democracy. Trump has turned the ugly American into the immoral, venal American, someone who doesn’t care about democracy. He just cares about the enrichment of oligarchs. He just cares about flexing power. So American popularity ratings are soft. Power is the lowest it’s been since the end of the first term, which was the lowest it had been since the Iraq invasion under President Bush. And and people around the world have have said, you know, you know, you keep telling us that you’re going to change. You know, President Biden said America is back. And the rest of the world said, for how long? And then Trump was elected. So I think a lot of people feel like, you know what? We can’t really trust America anymore."
