Dem Rep. Al Green Reflects on His Primary and Why He Wasn’t Able to Avoid a Runoff Election with His Opponent

‘They made it clear that I was a target’

EXCERPT:

REPORTER: "What do you make of the narrative about age, generational change, obviously — "

GREEN: "Well, I am generational change."

BALLASY: "And also, the actions on the floor, your actions have been controversial. Do you think they helped you in your race that’s going to a runoff or do you think they may hurt you in the district?"

GREEN: "I don't do things of that nature because of politics. When you insult black people by equating them to apes, that's about more than politics. This is a question of conscience. Do you allow that to go unchallenged? And the president had to be challenged, and I would do it again and again and again. If it cost me the election, I would do it again. So I didn’t bother to think about that. I just think that this president is a racist. I hope you picked that up. Yeah, he’s a racist. We have to challenge him. We shouldn't have a racist in the White House."
