Jon Meacham on Global Reaction to Trump’s Actions: ‘Not Well, and They All Wonder, Are They Going to Be Next?’
RUSH EXCERPT:
MEACHAM: “Not well. And they all wonder, are they going to be next? Right. And America has always been stronger when we’ve invested in our alliances. We prevailed in the Cold War not simply because we made the most nukes, but because we invested in NATO. We reached out in a vision of the world that because the world had become so much smaller, largely because of air power, that the world was now a neighborhood again. FDR talked about how he was. He was articulating the four freedoms, getting ready to do that in the State of the Union in 1941. And he was dictating it. And he said, we we are going to support freedom from fear anywhere in the world. We’re going to support freedom of worship anywhere in the world, freedom from want, anywhere in the world. And an advisor, Harry Hopkins, said to him, Mr. President, I wouldn’t say everywhere in the world because America doesn’t care what’s going on in java. And FDR looked at him and said, the world is getting so small now, Harry. They’re going to have to care. And now the folks are wondering, will this particularly autocratic American president turn there,”
