Peter Baker on Refunds Amid Tariff Loss: These Are Taxes and They Were Paid by Americans
RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Well, remember who paid these tariffs. These are taxes and they were paid by Americans. Actually they’re paid by consumers who had these added to the price of their goods, or businesses that absorb some of the cost in bringing imports into the country. So they weren’t paid by foreign countries. Now, whether these businesses and or consumers can now get refunds of that money is really not clear. The Supreme Court didn’t address that subject in any meaningful way in their in their opinion. And the president certainly doesn’t seem willing or eager to go about giving the money back. So I imagine there’s going to be future litigation about that. Some of these companies that have paid and their consumers paid large amounts of money, presumably will go to court and say, okay, give us the money back. You saw jb pritzker, the governor of Illinois, yesterday, a Democrat, you know, in a taunting kind of way, sent President Trump an invoice for what he says is the amount that the federal government owes the people of Illinois for the tariffs and taxes that they were charged. How you go about it is hard to know, though. You know, you bought something yesterday. It had a $2 additional tariff on it. Are you going to be able to apply for that $2? how would you individually go about this for anything other than large purchases?"
