Cornell Belcher: If ICE Is Coming After Hispanics and Latinos, African-Americans Are Next
EXCERPT:
BELCHER: “No, it does not. When you look at, you know, the part of the problem for the president is that he has some, some high — some celebrity African-Americans that have — that are around him right now like Nicki Minaj. But the vast majority of black leadership in this country, both politically and culturally, are on the opposite side. And the vast majority of black leadership in this country, both politically and culturally, have spoken out against his policies and the structural, as well as individual racism that we see coming out of this. Look, this is someone who just, what, last week, and you all covered it, an unapologetic white nationalist, you know, before the Senate hearings, trying to be appointed to a high position in the government. Right? African-Americans see that, right? This is — this is beyond just policy. This is an existential threat to black and brown communities. And the same thing we see with ICE. And I look in focus groups, I talk to African-American voters and they say, look, what ICE is doing is atrocious. But if you know, if they’re coming after the Latinos and Hispanics, you know who’s next? We know who’s next.”
