Brit Hume: Talarico’s Claim That the FCC Shut Down His Stephen Colbert Interview ‘Is Silly’

‘Equal time rule for political candidates when you are close to the date of an election’

EXCERPT:

HUME: “Well, I think, Bret, that Talarico’s claim that the FCC shut down his interview is silly. There has been, for nearly a century, the equal time rule for political candidates when you are close to the date of an election. And in January, the Trump Administration tightened the rules a little bit as it pertains to shows like Stephen Colbert’s show, which is supposed to be a late-night entertainment show, and they said, 'You can no longer use that as a way of getting around the equal time rule if you are going to have candidates on.' But the FCC said nothing about this particular case until it was underway, until it had already happened, and CBS’s lawyers looked at the situation, saw the Talarico interview had been done, and decided that it was risky to air it and run afoul of the equal time rule. So it didn’t air there, it aired on YouTube or whatever, with some promotion on the television network, and probably did that candidate more good than any unaired interview network TV has ever done. That seems to be where we are at the moment."
