I know my family‘s history is — you know, my grandfather is James Joshua Thomas, a man who was born in South Carolina. And my family, when he was just a toddler, that he was run out by the Ku Klux Klan, that he still returned to this country. He became the first black minister in the history of the Dutch Reformed Church. He died while I was in Afghanistan fighting for this country, and he had a deep Jamaican accent his entire life. And he‘s maybe the most patriotic American I‘ve ever met. And I lived through him. He lives through me, his commitment to this country.”
