Fmr. ICE Asst. Chief Counsel: ICE Had No Targets in Minneapolis, They Were Trying to Detain Anyone They Could

‘All they have to show to arrest someone is that the person was born abroad, and that gives them the ability to arrest someone’

EXCERPT:

CARDENAS: “No. And I think that what this administration is not giving the public the benefit of the doubt here is that the way that they were operating in Minneapolis was essentially chaotic. They didn’t have any targets. They were out trying to detain anyone and everyone that they could. People — like, the burden is very low in immigration. All they have to show to arrest someone is that the person was born abroad, and that gives them the ability to arrest someone. So it’s not going to be uncommon that U.S. citizens get caught up in the way that this administration is enforcing immigration. And when we look at the cooperation, it doesn’t mean that people’s rights are not getting violated. We just have local law enforcement trying to articulate a reasonable suspicion for a stop that can be based on the person’s look, the way they speak, based on recent Supreme Court rulings. And ICE is right there next to them, booking them in and arresting them to fill quotas.”
