Gretchen Whitmer Calls on Trump to Renegotiate USMCA : ‘It Is the Backbone of Our Economy’

WHITMER: “By making Canada our adversary, we have now forced North America to open up the door to that very possibility happening across, you know, our footprint in Mexico and Canada and the United States. And, so, the president has an opportunity to renegotiate USMCA. He negotiated it in the first place. Was it perfect? No. None — these never are perfect. This is an opportunity for him to renegotiate USMCA, with perhaps make a few tweaks, but ultimately that has worked, and it is the backbone of our economy, not just in Michigan, but for the United States, and that’s why I think if we want to continue to manufacture, we’ve seen nine months of depression in manufacturing. This is the linchpin to remedying that, and he’s got the opportunity and I hope he takes it.”
