James Talarico: Our Southern Border Should Be Like Our Front Porch, There Should Be a Giant Welcome Mat out Front and a Lock on the Door

TALARICO: "I think Texans understand immigration better than most people around the country, because we live with the consequences, we know the challenges, and we know the benefits of it. I’ve said that I think our southern border should be like our front porch. There should be a giant welcome mat out front and a lock on the door. Those aren’t mutually exclusive goals. We can welcome immigrants who want to come here and contribute and live the American dream and make our community stronger and richer, and we can also have a system that keeps out people who mean to do us harm. People have a right to know who’s coming into our country. And the failures on our southern border have opened the door to this extremism that we’re currently seeing masked man in unmarked vehicles, kidnapping people off the street, tearing parents from their children. They’re waiting in school, pickup lines, they're waiting in in hospital waiting rooms. And so, we should be cracking down on the cartels, not our communities. We should be deporting gang members, not moms and babies. I I think that is what most Texans and most Americans want to see. They want to see a policy that’s pro-immigrant and pro-security. We don’t have that right now, both political parties have failed us on this issue. I plan on fighting for that kind of middle ground if I’m elected as U.S. senator."
