Basil Smikle: Trump Is Counting on the Coalitions ‘That He Put Together to Get Elected,’ to Behave Similarly in the Next Election

‘They’re losing votes in the Latino community, people are awake to a lot of the brutality’

EXCERPT:

SMIKLE: “He’s not. And let me go back to David’s point, because I think it’s really important to kind of explain where Mike Johnson is in all of this. What, to David’s point, what the Republicans, what Donald Trump in particular count on in this redistricting is that the coalitions that he put together to get elected are actually going to behave similarly in this next election. They’re losing votes in the Latino community. People are awake to a lot of the brutality, verbal and otherwise, that this administration has levied against the least of us, the most vulnerable among us. And if those members are being swatted, if this carrot-and-stick approach that the president is using has the effect of those legislators saying, you know what, that carrot’s not sweet enough for me and I’m going to go in a different direction. When you layer on top of that, the meeting that the DNC just had in L.A., they’re putting more money into state legislative seats.“
